Goals for the Monroe Depot Library design
Depot
The Monroe Train Depot was hidden behind tall buildings for many
years. People driving through Monroe never knew a depot existed. A goal of the
library design is to locate the depot in a more prominent area where people passing by are
greeted with the depot architecture and history.
The depot's freight area is the only remaining portion of the original
Monroe Train Depot. The freight section has exposed studs and trusses. If we
are to use the depot as heated meeting space, we must insulate the walls and roof.
The roof insulation can go over the roof sheathing, leaving the original trusses exposed,
however, the exterior walls are more challenging. In order to leave studs (and
vintage graffiti) exposed, either the exterior siding would have to be removed and
insulation be placed over the studs or, the siding could remain in place, the cavity
between the studs would be filled with insulation, and gypsum board would cover the
studs. Our goal is to leave some connection between the new library and the depot so
that at least one wall of the depot could be an interior wall and the studs could remain
exposed.
Depot colors will be original Southern Pacific gold.
Raise depot to original platform floor elevation (with ADA access).
Depot and restrooms can be accessed without going through the library.
Library
Self-check stations and staff/information kiosk.
Design to incorporate a bookstore/living room feel.
Window seating.
Southern building orientation for natural daylighting and passive solar.
"Atrium" section of library for natural ventilation and
ductwork.
Design daylighting and ventilation to keep building as even temperature
without harming library books and materials.
Minimal or no windows on west wall.
Energy efficient design.
Incorporate historical architecture of Monroe into design.
Overall Design
Courtyard/exterior gathering area.
New library borrows from common forms in the area.
Parking to the south to accommodate possible future site uses.
